What is Prep N’ Play?

Prep N’ Play is a developmental physical activity program designed to support children to build fundamental movement skills through structured sport and play.

The program focuses on helping children develop the building blocks needed for everyday movement, physical activity and participation in sport — supporting confidence, coordination and lifelong physical wellbeing.

Prep N’ Play is delivered by qualified professionals and uses sport as a fun and motivating way to develop essential movement skills.

Prep N’ Play is delivered in special schools FOR FREE with the generous support of Variety – the Children’s Charity, enabling greater access to quality physical activity programs for children.

Why Fundamental Movement Skills Matter

Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) are the basic movement patterns that underpin all physical activity and sport. These include skills such as:

  • Running

  • Jumping

  • Throwing

  • Catching

  • Kicking

  • Balancing

Research shows that these skills are learned and developed over time, not innate, and are critical for children’s:

  • Physical development

  • Social participation

  • Confidence and wellbeing

  • Ongoing engagement in physical activity

Strong fundamental movement skills help children succeed not just in sport, but in everyday life.

How Prep N’ Play Works

Prep N’ Play runs over an 6-8 week program, using a structured, sport-based approach to build movement skills progressively.

Program Structure

  • Baseline assessment at the start of the program

  • Weekly sessions focused on skill development through sport

  • Final assessment to track progress and growth

Each session is approximately 60 minutes and includes:

  • Warm-up and movement preparation

  • Targeted skill development

  • Applying skills through sport-based activities

  • Cool down and relaxation
